Hi!
So I’ve decided if you guys are going to watch me grow through the next three years I might as well show you some of my work from college and I’ve chosen my final major project!
I called my final major project Dream block. I combined lucid dreams and signs together. I done a lot of experimenting on different signs and researched at how lucid dreams work. I decided that I will use a Rubik’s cube and on every square different signs would be placed. Theses signs will be guiding you through your own chosen pathway to form your dream, I thought that this would get people to actively participate in and manipulate imaginary experiences in the dream environment. That’s where your journey begins. There were no right or wrong. However when I discussed this with my teacher we came to a conclusion that people would end up with the same dream at the end and I did not want this to happen. So my teacher suggested that I should use the Jenga blocks. Which wasn’t a bad idea… It was just what I needed to make it work.
I actually didn’t think that this was going to work but me being stubborn I went with it any when hoping and praying that something good would come out this… :/
When we first got this project ‘Exploration and Discovery’ I got really excited because I knew that I would be able to base my project on almost any thing.
At the beginning of this project I started to look at maps and during the half term holidays I took a journey to reading. Not realising, I focused on different signs that guided me to my destination.
So I did research on signs mostly road signs and found books that would help guided me to what I wanted to do, which did helped me to be more opened minded when experimenting. I Looked at the different shapes, and the uniqueness behind the sign. I took another trip to central London with my beautiful friend Uzma Faheem. Using the tube map as a reference on where to go and how to get there. Through out my trip I took pictures of signs that were displayed around the city this was my primary research it was also a way of tracking my journey.
Then the FUN part my class took a visit to the science museum, Yaaaaaaaay!! J
I was very interested on the section: why do we sleep and dream? I wanted to understand more on the aspect how we dream. I did some more research on dreams and started to focus on lucid dreams, because with lucid dreams you can control what happens during your dream and it’s very much like the real world. I Found a film called Inception (Which is an AWEOME film) that is based on lucid dreams and the whole experiences. ‘Dream within a dream’ exploring the idea of people sharing a dream space — entering a dream space and sharing a dream. That gives you the ability to access somebody’s unconscious mind.
This what I wanted to happen, you would relate with my final peace as you would physically and mentally decide the journey you take, just like in a lucid dream.
After all my research I started to experiment with the different signs I found in books, my pictures. I tried to use as many different techniques and processes as possible. I looked a Banksy work and the way he interrupted signs. I tried to use different materials such as paper clips, tracing paper, paint and even burning the paper just to give my work a different effect and feeling. This is because don’t want my final peace to be boring and plain. I want people to Notice and remember their journey.
I noticed that most road signs had a limit of color on them they mostly used: Red, Back and white. However there were signs where the background was in blue, green and yellow. I think that these colours are used based on where the sign are placed. Most of my experimental work was handcraft, I love handcraft work. Just so you guys know!
Work… Work… Work… and Paaaaoow! The art and design Exhibition!!
Yep I managed to finish everything on time thanks to two of my amazing Friends Charlie O’Sullivan and Uzma Faheem. If you guys are reading this Yep I just admitted it to the world, you two are AWESOME!! Much love for you guys.
Till next time
Jet xoxo
